Making connections between the classroom and the community
Service learning is a teaching method designed to involve students in authentic and meaningful service to their communities. Service learning makes connections between the classroom and the community and provides structured time for students to reflect on their service experiences. It is intended to instill a sense of civic responsibility by encouraging students to access their impact on the community as active contributors to society. Students can engage in a variety of activities.
All service learning opportunities and hours are now tracked by a new automated system known as X2Vol (Time to volunteer!). Students can access X2Vol via Blackboard.com and Family Connections. Service learning and volunteer opportunities can now be searched through FCPS and Fairfax High School on the X2Vol system, or self-generated by students, again using X2Vol. As they arise, local opportunities are posted on the Fairfax High School on-line X2Vol bulletin board and on the Service Learning bulletin board outside room 233. Although Service Learning is no longer a requirement for graduation, students should not ask themselves, “Why should I volunteer?” but instead they should ask, “Why not volunteer for a good cause or to help someone? “
