August 30, 2024
Happy Friday Fairfax Families!
CONGRATULATIONS on finishing the second week of school! It was a great week to be a LION! The students have been simply PAWSome. We are focusing closely on recognizing our PBIS tenants here at FHS - Promoting Empathy, Accountability for our Actions, Working Hard, and Self-Advocacy. We have seen these core values in the classroom, the cafeteria, and the halls. Students and staff are PAWSitively committed to a great year.
It has also been a delight visiting highly engaging classrooms and observing lessons that took over our hallways while we created commercials, measured distance and time, and even danced for our language lesson. There were even a few very spirited scavenger hunts in the library. Lions love literacy!
Sports have begun and the energy is FAIRFAX FIERCE! We've spiked with our volleyball teams, ran the distance with track, and are gearing up for Friday night under the lights with the field hockey and football teams. This is a reminder that our late buses will begin September 4, and this is an amazing opportunity to connect with clubs and activities.
I truly hope all of our LIONS will take advantage of the beautiful weather, re-charge their ROAR, and celebrate the successful start to the school year. We want to encourage all parents to get involved with our school community, your partnership and communication is key to student success. The best way to do this is to JOIN THE PTSA. I'll see you at their first meeting on the 17th!
PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS -- We look forward to connecting with parents and guardians at Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 18.
Sincerely,

Reminders for Visiting Our School
Please know we take the safety and security of our students and staff very seriously. All school visitors must enter FHS by way of “Door 1.” All school visitors will need to check in to the school visitor system in the front office before entering the school.
When outside, visitors are not permitted to visit school buses or playgrounds or to observe students from parking lots or other areas on school campuses.
Parents/caregivers are welcome to check in with their child's teacher via email during the first week if they are anxious about how their child is transitioning.
Fairfax High School, in conjunction with Fairfax City Police, are committed to ensuring a safe start to the school year. During daily dismissal you may see police presence in areas around the school as students walk and commute home.
Safety Drills During the School Year
Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.
The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.
Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your students before and after school lockdown drills.
⚠️ Know Our Security Terms
FCPS uses specific terminology to describe the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations. It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.
Watch this video to learn about safety terms including lockdown; secure the building; and stay put, stay tuned.
If students, staff, or community members have a safety concern at school (that is not an immediate emergency), they should submit a tip to the FCPS Safety Tipline. In an emergency, please call 9-1-1.

Fall Registration for the World Languages Credit By Exam
What is the World Languages Credit by Exam?
The World Languages Credit By Exam (WLCBE) assesses linguistic proficiency in languages other than English. Linguistic proficiency is the ability to use language in real world situations in a spontaneous interaction, non-rehearsed context, and in a manner acceptable and appropriate to native speakers of the language.
Students who take this exam may earn up to three world languages credits for levels one, two, and three for the language of the exam. The credits may fulfill the world languages requirements for the Advanced Studies Diploma. In addition to earning world languages credits, students may also meet the world languages criteria for the Virginia Department of Education's Seal of Biliteracy.
The exam is offered one time per school year. A student may participate in the exam two times per language, once per year, between grades 7 through 12. In other words, students have two chances per language to earn credits by taking the exam.
Beginning school year 2024-2025, depending on the language, students will take the computer-based Avant STAMP or the paper-pencil test.
This year, the WLCBE is transitioning to a digital platform with a school-based testing administration. The exam will be scheduled during the school day and hosted by each school this November. Students will register through their school counselor. The WLCBE registration window for the exam is Wednesday, September 4, 2024 - Friday, October 4, 2024. NO LATE REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
NEW Students who wish to register for the exam must provide registration consent by returning the WLCBE Notification and Registration Form to their school counselor.
