It is a Fabulous Fairfax Friday!

We have so much to be grateful for and many PAWSome accomplishments to celebrate. Here are some of the highlights from this week:

Thanksgiving Celebration: We kicked off the holiday season with a heartwarming Thanksgiving celebration. Our cafeteria team prepared a fabulous lunch, which was served by our incredible Admin team, and enjoyed by all students and staff. It was a joyous occasion, and we are grateful for everyone who came together to make it such a special day.

Honor Roll Recognition: A huge congratulations to the 775 students who earned recognition on the A/B Honor Roll! This week, we were thrilled to present them with certificates and a sweet treat to celebrate their hard work and academic achievement. Your dedication to excellence is truly inspiring.

Fairfax Lions Football: Exciting news for our Fairfax Lions Football team! They defeated West Potomac in an action-packed game and are advancing to the next round of the region playoffs next Tuesday. Let’s show our support and cheer them on as they continue their playoff journey!

Much Ado About Nothing: Our talented FHS Players took to the stage this week with a spectacular production of Much Ado About Nothing. The show has been a huge hit, with sold out shows, and it has brought so much laughter and entertainment to our community. Congratulations to the cast and crew for showcasing such amazing talent.

Promoting Language and Culture: We are incredibly proud to promote the eight foreign languages we offer at Fairfax High School in conjunction with our Academy. This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming visitors from Korea, who observed both our language and instructional programs. It was a wonderful opportunity to share the breadth of learning that happens here at FHS and strengthen our global connections.

Family Connection: Fairfax High School is offering courses as part of our Fairfax Family University series. Currently we offer English Language Learning classes, computer courses, and preschool educational support. Be on the lookout for our added offerings in the new year. Please reach out to one of our FHS Family Liaisons or stop into our Family Engagement Center to learn more.

Community Spotlight 🎒Food for Neighbors Red Bag Program

Fairfax High School is partnering with Food For Neighbors to help feed our local students who deal with food insecurity outside of school hours. Even in an area as wealthy as Northern Virginia, one in four kids are struggling with hunger. Food For Neighbors is a local organization addressing this problem by collecting food from our community via the Red Bag Program and donating directly to our local schools. The food is then distributed to the students every week through our food pantry. We hope you will consider participating in the Red Bag food collection program. You can make a difference in a local student’s life by simply adding a few extra items to your shopping cart every two months.

Here’s how it works:

Request a reusable Red Bag HERE and Food For Neighbors will drop it off at your house.
Fill the Red Bag with food items that are listed on a tag on that bag.
Put the Red Bag outside your front door in the morning on the next bag collection day. Collection dates are also listed on the bag tag. And don’t worry, FFN will send reminders.
Your Red Bag will be picked up from your house, the food sorted at a local school and delivered directly to our school food pantry.

As an added benefit, you can get a tax deduction for the food that you donate! With your help, even more kids can be fed.

For more information on the Red Bag program click here. Check out what items FFN collects as they are targeted to ready-made, individually packaged food items that students and teens can eat on-the-go or with little preparation. As we partner with FFN, other critical volunteer opportunities include: Driving to pick up filled Red Bags and Sorting the donated food during the Red Bag Day events. Visit the FFN FAQ page to find out more and to sign up to volunteer in these two very important roles. These are great opportunities for our students to receive volunteer service hours, too. School Spotlight Fairfax Academy Hosts Korean Student Visitors

Earlier this week, Teachers and Coordinators from Korea came to visit Fairfax Academy & Fairfax High School. They work with the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) scholarship program and were interested in observing our language classes, particularly our Korean program and getting a tour of our school. These visitors had never toured an American high school before and commented on how big and beautiful our school was. They felt very welcomed by our community and said they wished they had a high school like ours back in Korea!

Fairfax Lions Need to Know: ❄️ Preparing for Winter Weather!

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.

📱Cell Phone Feedback Opportunity

Student Feedback Opportunity for FCPS Cell Phone Policy and SR&R

FCPS is working with K12 Insight to host a community forum for families, staff members, and students to provide feedback on the school division’s cell phone policies and practices, and the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document. FCPS is looking for more student participants (grades 3-12) to help ensure diverse perspectives from our community.

The community forum will be held on Tuesday, December 10, 6:30-8 p.m., at the Willow Oaks Administrative Center. If your student is interested in providing feedback, please visit the Cell Phone Policy Forum registration page to learn more. Families must register their child by Monday, November 25.

SEL Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

📍Boundary Review Community Meeting

Community meetings regarding FCPS’ comprehensive boundary review will take place in each of the division's six regions. You are encouraged to attend the meeting in our region, which will take place on

Monday, December 2, 6:30-8 p.m., at Westfield High School Cafeteria.

What is the ASVAB?

The ASVAB, or Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, is a free career exploration program that helps students identify their strengths and explore potential career paths. The ASVAB is used as an entrance exam for the military but it’s more than just a military test – it's a valuable tool for anyone planning their future!

How can the ASVAB help me?

Identify your skills: The ASVAB assesses your abilities in math, science, verbal skills, and mechanical comprehension, helping you understand your strengths.
Explore career options: Receive personalized career suggestions based on your ASVAB results and learn about different career paths and educational opportunities.
Plan your future: Whether you're considering college, trade school, or entering the workforce, the ASVAB provides resources to help you.

Sophomores, juniors and seniors can take the ASVAB for FREE at FHS!

The ASVAB will be administered at FHS on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at 8:30 am. Please plan to arrive to the MPR by 8:15 am! The test will take approximately 3 hours.

📖 Senior Ads & 📸 Senior Portrait info! Senior Ads!

Families of Seniors, the deadline for senior ads to be submitted for publication in this year’s yearbook, Fairfax High School’s 90th yearbook, is quickly approaching. All senior ads must be submitted and paid for by Nov 30th. We have plenty of room left and would love to have the chance to honor your senior with a page in a book that will last for decades (seriously, we have books from 1936 in the yearbook archive).

Senior Portraits!

Seniors! The last dates to have your senior portraits taken (and the last day to get your picture in the yearbook) will be December 3, 4, 5, & 6. Appointments are available after school from 3pm-8pm. If you miss this opportunity, your last resort will be to travel to our photo partner’s studio in Annapolis to have your photos taken; there will be no more on-site sittings available at the school.

To book your appointment, go to https://seniors.legacystudios.com/fairfax-hs-va/ There are several different options available to you depending on how many outfits you would like to wear in your photos and each sitting has a different fee depending on the time you will be with the photographer. The only photo included in the yearbook is the formal photo and if you are only interested in appearing in the yearbook and have no other outfit changes, the sitting will be free.

Formal wear in the form of a drape or tux will be provided by the photographers as will caps and gowns if you choose a package that includes those photos. If neither the drape nor tux feels appropriate to you, you are welcome to provide your own formal attire, though we request that you wear all-black (such as a black turtleneck, button down, or dress) so that the senior section of the yearbook appears uniform.

FX Players Presents: Much Ado About Nothing

The FX Players presents William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, Nov. 20-23, in the FHS Auditorium. One of Shakespeare’s most frequently performed comedies, Much Ado includes two quite different stories of romantic love. Hero and Claudio fall in love almost at first sight, but an outsider, Don John, strikes out at their happiness. Beatrice and Benedick are kept apart by pride and mutual antagonism until others decide to play Cupid.

Performances are Nov 20-23 @ 7pm, with a matinee @ 2pm on Nov. 23.

Happy Friday Fairfax Family and Friends,

I always enjoy the month of November. The weather is crisper, the trees are now bare, and we move into an exciting season of fall sports playoffs and exciting artistic productions. Tonight, the football team will host our Round 1 regional contest at home. The evening kicks off with a FALL FESTIVAL and bonfire. Can it get any s'more awesome? YES IT CAN! We just led a spirited send off for our girl's field hockey team as they head into the state semi-final tonight in Virginia Beach. GOOD LUCK LIONS! Our Fairfax Players are rehearsing around the clock to prepare for the opening night of Much Ado About Nothing. You won't want to miss this curtain call.

Next week, November 18-22 is American Education Week. We will recognize all of our educators and support professionals in a variety of ways. We want to extend recognition to each PAWSome staff member who works to make Fairfax High School an amazing space. We will also host our Thanksgiving staff and student meal, and we will recognize our Quarter 1 Honor Roll Recipients.

In this season of gratitude, I want to say "thank you" to our kind, committed, talented, and dedicated students, parents, and community members. People are always the key ingredient to a great community.

Student Spotlight FCCLA College Day @ GMU

Fairfax HS, Madison HS, and South County HS Family, Career and Community, Leaders of America (FCCLA) members attended FCCLA College Day at GMU. Students learned about Family & Consumer Sciences related majors at GMU, participated in a campus scavenger hunt, and gained leadership skills through FCCLA activities.

School Spotlight Fairfax HS is a Purple Star School! 💜⭐ 🏫

Fairfax High School was recognized at the School Board meeting this week for becoming a First Time Virginia Distinguished Purple Star School! This is a state initiative to help make our schools a welcoming and supportive place for our military-connected students and families. The program aims to reduce the challenges that military-connected student face, such as frequent school moves, and support during deployments. We are proud and honored to achieve this recognition!

National Family Engagement Day, Nov. 21

This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success. National Family Engagement Day is Nov. 21st.

FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.

Additionally, every school has a family liaison who will welcome and orient families, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development.

If you haven't already - please take a moment to nominate our Outstanding Staff! It only takes a few minutes but means so much!

Nominations are now open for the Outstanding Employee Awards! To submit a nomination for a Fairfax High School Outstanding Employee in one of the categories below, please complete the nomination through the Google form linked in each title. You may nominate one employee at our school or multiple employees (one individual may only nominate one employee per category.)

All that is required for a preliminary nomination is a paragraph or two about how this employee demonstrates exceptional work in the criteria for that category. The google form link has more information regarding the criteria for each of these awards and the eligibility requirements are below.

Outstanding Teacher

Eligibility: Has at least three years of experience as a teacher (in any school/school district); librarians are included in this category

Outstanding New Teacher

Eligibility: Has up to three years of experience as a teacher (in any school/school district); librarians are included in this category

Outstanding Principal

Eligibility: Has at least three years of experience as a building principal (in any school/school district)

Outstanding Leader

Eligibility: At least one year of experience in their current position as a Schedule-C or School-Based Administrator scale employee (that is not the building principal):

Common positions in this category: Assistant and Associate Principals, Director of Student Activities, Director of Student Services

Outstanding Professional Employee

Eligibility: At least one year experience in current position as a Schedule-B employee or other non-instructional employee in a school that supports school leadership

Common positions in this category: School-Based Technology Specialist, Technology Support Specialist, Assessment Coach, Career Center Specialist, Instructional Coach, Psychologist, Social Worker, School Counselor, Safety and Security Specialist, Resource Teachers that serve in an administrative role in a school

Student Services Updates Wellness Screening

This school year on Monday, November 18 - Wednesday, November 20 (Grades 9) AND December 4,6,10 (Grades 11), school staff are working to teach 9th and 11th grade students about mental health and how to seek help if they are worried about themselves or a friend. We are using a program called Signs of Suicide (SOS). The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help. SOS has been used by thousands of schools over the past few decades. Studies have shown that it effectively teaches students about depression and suicide while reducing the number of students’ self-reported suicide attempts. We encourage you to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn. FX Players Presents: Much Ado About Nothing

The FX Players presents William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, Nov. 20-23, in the FHS Auditorium. One of Shakespeare’s most frequently performed comedies, Much Ado includes two quite different stories of romantic love. Hero and Claudio fall in love almost at first sight, but an outsider, Don John, strikes out at their happiness. Beatrice and Benedick are kept apart by pride and mutual antagonism until others decide to play Cupid.

Performances are Nov 20-23 @ 7pm, with a matinee @ 2pm on Nov. 23.

IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair

Parents/caregivers, school staff, and students over the age of 14 are invited to attend an interactive event celebrating the individualized education program (IEP) process. The IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, November 16, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Jackson Middle School.

The event is sponsored by Fairfax County Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA). Activities include simulated IEP meetings, break-out sessions on the various parts of an IEP, and a resource fair to learn more about community supports. Register in advance.

How can I help?

The All Night Grad (ANG ‘25) committee is working concessions 11/16 - 11/17 at the Fairfax City Holiday Craft Show at Fairfax High School. All the proceeds for concessions benefit the Senior Class ANG celebration to be held the night of graduation. This is our first fundraiser and a GREAT way to defray the cost of the event and keep ANG ticket prices low. The Craft Show is also a great place to shop for unique gifts before or after your shift ;)

BUT we need assistance - we need lots of parents and students to pull this off! (Junior parents are highly encouraged to assist since you will be running the event next year!)

All students can get volunteer hours for their support, plus it's a lot of fun for our Seniors! Volunteers also receive FREE entry to the craft fair to shop before or after their shift, a $10 savings!!

Happy Friday Fairfax Families and Friends,

We were so excited to kick off the week welcoming in our families for our ROAR Round Up. There were many robust conversations about supporting student success in collaboration with teacher partnership. Together WE WIN!

Yesterday ,we invited our barnyard friends for some Quarter 2 fun. Hugging a hare and loving an alpaca are always fun ways to spend lunch with friends and faculty. We continue to keep SEL a focus here.

Today, we celebrated Veteran's Day. It was a delight to see the flag display in front of the school and also recognize our veteran teachers and family with military members who are serving. We also hosted a few guest speakers to share their experiences with students.

Fairfax is excited to be one of three pilot schools for AP Seminar 10 and AP Human Geography. As we have concluded Quarter 1, students and teachers have shared the excitement around these advanced course work opportunities.

Student Spotlight HBCU Fair @ Edison HS

Our students had a fantastic experience attending the HBCU Fair at Edison High School. They found it both inspiring and educational, as it provided valuable insights into the rich opportunities available at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The trip sparked genuine excitement, allowing students to connect with admissions representatives, learn about academic programs, and gain a deeper appreciation for HBCU communities.

AP Seminar Pilot Classes

This week we celebrated our AP Seminar English 10 pilot classes. These students are the first students in FCPS to ever take this class, and they are rocking their new class shirts with FHS pride!

Field Hockey Team Region Champs!!

Congratulations to our Region Championship Field Hockey team on their amazing 3-0 victory over Woodson HS. The team will host the quarterfinals of the VHSL State Tournament on Tuesday, November 12th at 6pm verse Cosby HS from the Richmond area.

Our Boy's Volleyball team in their inaugural season defeated Westfield HS 3-2 in an exciting quarterfinals match and will now advance to the Super Region Tournament Semi-Finals. The team will travel to Oakton HS where the Lions will take on the Oakton Cougars on Monday, November 11th at 6pm. Good luck to both field hockey and volleyball as they advance in the post-season.

📸 Underclass Picture Retakes, Nov. 14 & 15

Underclass Makeups and retakes are scheduled for November 14-15 in the MPR. Students will be permitted to drop by anytime during the day when they have free time or when a teacher permits them to leave for a moment.

Seniors have one last chance to schedule a session coming up. The last dates will be at the beginning of December and can be booked by going to Fairfax Senior Scheduling.

📍Boundary Review Meetings Start This Month

As a reminder, FCPS has started the process of reviewing school boundaries across the division. This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair

Services for Hearing-Impaired and Visually-Impaired Students

Students with sensory disabilities require specialized services and support to access instruction that is typically presented visually and auditorily (by means of hearing). FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Tutoring Resources for Families

Is your family looking for resources to help support your child’s academic success? FCPS’ Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of district employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to be hired as a tutor by parents. FRC maintains this list, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource.

FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

Quarter 1 has come to a close and we have had a PAWSome time welcoming in the new school year. We are dedicated to helping all of our LIONS build a strong foundation for success by balancing academic rigor with essential organizational skills during the first semester. We are also looking forward to celebrating student growth and commitment to academic excellence in the next few weeks with our Honor Roll recognition and Lions on the Rise awards.

We celebrated an energetic Fall Spirit Week filled with dress up days and fun games. Fostering school pride and community engagement is always fantastic to see when students and staff come together in support of our school culture.

A true highlight of the week was the Fairfax Pyramid Concert that took us on a journey around the world. We welcomed 350 choral students from Daniels Run, Eagle View, Providence, Willow Springs, Katherine Johnson Middle School, and Fairfax High School. These beautiful voices united in harmony, showcasing the incredible talent within our pyramid. The future of Fairfax is filled with song!

Looking ahead, we are excited for parent conferences this Monday. These conversations are vital for strengthening the partnership between home and school, and we encourage all parents to participate. Based on the FHS Family Engagement Survey our parents asked for more opportunities to connect with the school and more strategies to support their students. The ROAR Round Up is here for YOU.

The Class of 2025 is READY to ROAR with early college admissions. Faculty and staff have enjoyed reviewing student essays and writing letters of recommendation in support of post-secondary options.

Arbor Day Poetry Contest Winner!

Mickey Johnson, 9th grader at Fairfax HS is the Arbor Day Poetry contest winner for 2024 for FHS. Mickey was recognized at the Arbor Day event last weekend at Kutner Park.

The night turns day as it all comes down

The beckoning of creatures as they come
The fishing of minnows are caught as a hum the voices of children as they are many and near
Noon is old as lunch is here
Memories fading closing fear

🗓️Calendar Reminders Quarter End, Early Release, Diwali/Dia de los Muertos and All Saints Day, Student Holidays

Thursday, October 31, is the last day of the first quarter, and a two-hour early release for students. Friday, November 1, is a holiday this year for Diwali and Dia de los Muertos and All Saints Day. All schools and offices will be closed. Schools are closed for students on Monday, November 4, for a school planning day, and Tuesday, November 5, for a teacher workday.

Eligibility: Has at least three years of experience as a building principal (in any school/school district)

Eligibility: At least one year of experience in their current position as a Schedule-C or School-Based Administrator scale employee (that is not the building principal):

IMPORTANT UPCOMING EVENT: The ROAR ROUND UP!

Fairfax High School is excited to welcome back mini-Parent/Teacher Conferences. The ROAR Round Up will be hosted on Monday,
November 4, from 8:30 am-11:30 am.

The field house will be set up with rows of tables, organized by department, with teachers sitting in alphabetical order within each department. They will have signs above their heads so you know who's who.
Doors to the field house will not open early. The field house lobby, however, will be open around 8:15 and light refreshments will be provided by the PTSA.
Bring a copy of your child's schedule or have a list of teacher names from your student. If you forget, copies of student schedules will be available, but bringing your own will result in one less line in which you need to stand. You can chat with the teachers in any order, you do not have to follow your child's schedule.
Lines form in front of each teacher, when it is your turn, step forward and sit down. You will have 4-6 minutes to chat with the teacher. If you request a longer conference, it may be better to work with the teacher or counselor to schedule an appointment for a different time.

The teacher will have your child's current grade report as a reference. You can ask if any assignments are missing. You can ask if homework is being turned in on time. You can ask about test corrections, retakes, support, etc. You can learn if your child is taking advantage of these policies to improve their grade. If your child is struggling in class, you can ask if they have gone to the teacher's classroom during Lion Time or stayed after school to get help during coach class or the learning lounge. You can also ask if there is anything you can do to support your student.

How long will it take? It depends on how many other parents are there to see the same teachers as you. If you are the only one in line to see your child's 7 teachers, you could be done in 20-30 minutes. You can come within any time during the 8:30-11:30 window.

📝Federal Impact Aid Survey now Online

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible.

For any families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE, we will provide paper forms starting Wednesday, November 13. Paper forms should be returned by Wednesday, December 4.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Learn how to activate your SIS ParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey.

Technical support for using ParentVUE or completing the survey online is available by submitting a Parent Support Request ticket. Select SISParent in the Application dropdown menu and type Federal Impact Aid Survey under Issue Description. Or, call the Parent Technology Help Desk at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS).

If you don’t have a SIS ParentVUE account, contact your child’s school for an activation letter.

Step 2: After you’ve logged into your ParentVue Account, look for the ‘Online Packets’ link at the top of the page. Click ‘Online Packets’.

Step 3: Next, click the ‘Federal Impact Aid Survey’ button on the bottom of the page:

If you have multiple children in Fairfax County Public Schools, please make sure to fill out a form for each of your children. You will know you have completed all of the forms when you see a green check next to each of their names on the final screen.

PSAT/SAT scores available Thursday, October 24 by 6pm. Students should access their College Board account to review scores. They will receive an Advisory lesson on Tuesday on how to review and interpret their scores.
Governor's Schools: Reminder for 10th and 11th grade students – It is time to apply to attend the summer residential Governor’s schools in Academic and Visual and Performing Arts. Emails went to students and parents on Thursday, October 24. Students who are accepted into one of the programs will live in residence halls in one of the state colleges in VA for four weeks in the June - late July timeframe. 2024-25 AP Test Opt-Out Timeline and Fees: As part of the FCPS FY 2025 Approved Budget, the fees for the first six AP tests taken for courses in which students are enrolled for high school credit will be paid for by FCPS. Students taking AP tests without enrolling in the corresponding FCPS course are responsible for the test fee(s). FCPS encourages all students to take AP tests for courses in which they are enrolled. However, students will have the opportunity to opt-out of the test(s) by filling out an Opt-Out form that was sent home with your student the week of September 23rd and October 7th. To assist in the decision-making process, students were provided a report with their previous tests and current AP course enrollment. AP students must make Opt-Out decisions by November 1st. Parents will be billed a $99 non-refundable test fee for AP exams, in December for tests that exceed the six FCPS-funded tests.
2025 AP Testing: Reference the College Board AP exam dates site for dates of AP Exams. Any questions regarding AP testing can be sent to Leslie Trieu, FHS AP Coordinator at [email protected].

Instructions for using My SchoolBucks online (if using the mobile app, instructions are the same but location of links will be different than shown here):

1. Go to myschoolbucks.com.

2. Click the Log In button in the top right corner of the screen.

3a. If you have an existing account, enter your user name and password.

3b. To create a new account, select “Register Now”. Students, DO NOT use your school email address. You must use a personal email address (@gmail.com, @yahoo.com, etc.).

4. Once you have successfully logged in, select “My Students” using the user control panel icon.

5. If your student's information is not shown, click "Add Student."

6. Enter student information as instructed and select “Add Student” when done. Repeat if you need to add more than one student. *Student name must match record in SIS exactly (including hyphenated last names).

7. Once the student information has been applied to your account you will be able to pay invoices for class fees and make purchases from the School Store using ACH, credit or debit card.

8. Invoices folder & School Store--Class fees are the only fee that will show in your invoices folder, everything else will be accessed by shopping in the school store.

All the proceeds for concessions benefit the Senior Class ANG celebration to be held the night of graduation. This is our first fundraiser and a GREAT way to defray the cost of the event and keep ANG ticket prices low. The Craft Show is also a great place to shop for unique gifts before or after your shift ;)

FHS Chorus Performs at the Kennedy Center with the NSO!

The Bel Canto Chorus students recently performed at the Kennedy Center with the National Symphony Orchestra! Their performance was AMAZING and something they will never forget. Congratulations to Director, Juliana Woodill, for advocating for our students and bringing them this once in a lifetime opportunity! Happy Friday Fairfax Family and Friends,

This week has been a remarkable celebration of talent and achievement at FHS!

I am proud to announce that Fairfax High School has earned a Gold Honor Roll rating from the College Board, a testament to our commitment to academic excellence. To learn more about this PAWSome recognition CLICK HERE.

We are also excited to announce that Fairfax High School was awarded the Virginia Distinguished First Time PURPLE STAR SCHOOL Award. We look forward to celebrating this recognition with our community and continue to strengthen partnerships and opportunities.

Our Bel Canto Chorus graced the stage of the Kennedy Center, providing backup vocals for indie-artist Aoife O’Donovan and they were accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra —a truly unforgettable experience for our students. Additionally, our band students had the incredible opportunity to receive real-time coaching from renowned composer, John Mackey, enhancing their skills and passion for music.

The Class of 2028 families spent an amazing evening with us as we shared information and opportunities to guarantee student success. We discussed academics, options, and supports available for each student.

We enjoyed a spectacular evening at our Masquerade of Music Concert, featuring captivating performances from our talented FHS orchestra and band. The costumes were an added treat.

Next week we will mark the end of Quarter. Please login to ParentVue and check grades and progress with your students. Remember that FHS offers Saturday School, the Learning Lounge, and Coach Class opportunities.

We look forward to seeing all of our families on November 4 from 8:30-11:30 at the ROAR Round Up. We are excited to bring back this amazing opportunity to touch base with you and partner together for student success.

Student Spotlight AVID Field Trip

On Tuesday our AVID students visited Old Dominion University and William & Mary. On the trip they got to tour these college campuses and get insights into what the life of a college student is. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, and is a program that helps students prepare for college and college success.

PSAT/SAT scores available Thursday, October 24 by 6pm. Students should access their College Board account to review scores. They will receive an Advisory lesson on Tuesday on how to review and interpret their scores.
Governor's Schools: Reminder for 10th and 11th grade students – It is time to apply to attend the summer residential Governor’s schools in Academic and Visual and Performing Arts. Emails went to students and parents on Thursday, October 24. Students who are accepted into one of the programs will live in residence halls in one of the state colleges in VA for four weeks in the June - late July timeframe. 2024-25 AP Test Opt-Out Timeline and Fees: As part of the FCPS FY 2025 Approved Budget, the fees for the first six AP tests taken for courses in which students are enrolled for high school credit will be paid for by FCPS. Students taking AP tests without enrolling in the corresponding FCPS course are responsible for the test fee(s). FCPS encourages all students to take AP tests for courses in which they are enrolled. However, students will have the opportunity to opt-out of the test(s) by filling out an Opt-Out form that was sent home with your student the week of September 23rd and October 7th. To assist in the decision-making process, students were provided a report with their previous tests and current AP course enrollment. AP students must make Opt-Out decisions by November 1st. Parents will be billed a $99 non-refundable test fee for AP exams, in December for tests that exceed the six FCPS-funded tests.

Safeway Immunization Clinics for All FCPS Students

Safeway Pharmacy will host immunization clinics for any FCPS student age 18 or younger at Frost Middle School on Monday, October 28, and Tuesday, October 29, from 3 to 7 p.m.

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times. A parent or guardian must accompany walk-in students age 18 or younger to provide consent. Learn more about immunization resources and registering in other languages for the Safeway clinic.

Students age 19 and older may access free immunizations at their middle/high school immunization clinic, the Fairfax County Health Department or through other community resources.

Elementary School Clinics

The Fairfax County Health Department will provide immunizations for FCPS elementary students on limited early release Mondays at their district offices. All school-required immunizations will be offered at no cost. Call 703-246-7100 to make your appointment.

Middle and High School Clinics

FCPS is partnering with the health department to host immunization clinics at middle and high schools. Clinics will take place during the school day. Students may only participate in the clinic at the school where they are enrolled. Parental/caregiver consent is required for students to receive immunizations.
