High Five Friday! What a Week at Fairfax High School,

From the classroom to the stage to the water, our Fairfax High School community has been buzzing with incredible talent and spirit.

This Week's Highlights:

  • Regatta Ready -On Saturday, our Regatta Teams took to the lake and brought the heat! Their dedication and teamwork were truly inspiring. Go LION Crew!
  • Fashion in Motion- Our Fashion In Motion students stunned us with their creativity in the amazing Fashion Show this week. The future of fashion is bright and truly fashion forward!
  • Curtain Call for the Academy Theater-The Signature Showcase was a smash hit! The student performers brought Broadway to life with their captivating showcase. Bravo!
  • Sounds of Success! This week, our music programs took center stage. The Choral students delivered a magical "Night at the Movies" concert, while the Jazz Band's groovy vibes and the Band's phenomenal spring concert had everyone tapping their feet.
  • Geospatial Gist-Our amazing geospatial students presented over 180 projects this week. We invited staff from JMU to review and provide feedback to our students. These projects ranged from urban college location analysis to geo-carbon emissions studies, and the depth of knowledge, research and creativity were impressive.
  • SOL Season- Testing season is here and we know there can be many stressors associated with testing. Please reach out if your student needs additional support as we finish the year with SOL's, final assignments,  and final exams.

Huge shoutouts to all our students, teachers, and staff who made this week so spectacular! Your hard work, talent, and dedication are truly what makes Fairfax High School ROAR.

Thank you for your partnership,

In FCPS, we all belong. From the first day of school, to the last day of school, every child matters. If your student is having a hard time finishing the year strong and attending school, please contact a trusted adult at the school—a teacher, counselor, or administrator. Visit FCPS’ website for more attendance resources

Si su estudiante está teniendo dificultades para terminar el año con fuerza y asistir a la escuela, por favor contacte a un adulto de confianza en la escuela-un maestro, consejero o administrador. 🚍 Student Bus Passes Offer Free Transportation All Year

🎓Colleges Still Accepting Applications

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) has released their annual list of colleges and universities that are still accepting applications from prospective freshmen or transfer students for the fall of 2023. Students and families are encouraged to use this tool to search colleges that still have space available. Users may narrow down the list of schools by state and view whether a school still has financial aid, as well as unfilled housing.

Additionally, NACAC has created an enrollment deposit fee waiver request form, considered by some institutions, for students experiencing significant financial hardship. Families can learn more about the enrollment deposit fee waiver and eligibility on the NACAC website. It is recommended that students and families contact their school counselor or college and career specialist with any questions.Students who still need assistance applying for the FAFSA or VASA (financial aid forms) can schedule a free appointment with our partners at College Access Fairfax. Email [email protected]. All FAFSA or VASA help that your school or College Access Fairfax provides is free.

FHS Testing Calendar - Volunteers Needed!

Students will be taking SOL tests and digital AP exams on their FCPS-issued Chromebooks. To minimize issues on exam day:

  • It is critical that ALL students bring their Chromebooks FULLY CHARGED.
  • Each student should also have their own power cord as the school does not have extras to lend.
  • Students will receive their testing schedule a week before their exam.
  • PLEASE make sure students are diligent about checking their SCHOOL email (@fcpsschools.net account).

Thank you for your help in ensuring your student is prepared to do their best on their exams!

Visit our school website to view the full testing calendar. Click here to download a PDF version: 2024 Spring Exam Schedule.pdf

Student Google Accounts: Action Needed

Fairfax students -

If you are preparing to graduate or leave FCPS for any reason, it’s important to know that your Google Workspace account will be automatically deactivated once you are no longer actively enrolled in FCPS. This process happens during the summer, shortly after the end of the school year.  Once your account is deactivated, you will no longer be able to login to your FCPS Google Drive or access your FCPS Gmail.

If you will no longer be an FCPS student after this school year, download or export any files you wish to keep before June 12th, 2024. The download process of files can take several days, so please make sure to give yourself plenty of time.

This year students have the option to use Google Takeout to export their files. Visit Google’s directions here: How to download your Google data using Takeout. It’s important to know that you will only be able to export files for which you are the owner.

If you’d prefer to manually select files from your Drive to download, follow the Downloading Your Data instructions on the Google Workspace Information for Students and Parents page of the FCPS website.

Please work with the tech support team at your school if you have questions.

Fairfax Lions Nice to Know:  Class of 2025 Senior Portraits!

CLASS OF 2025!

Believe it or not, it’s time to begin taking your senior portraits! We always begin in May because there are so many of you to photograph, and unlike underclassmen portraits, these are more of a photoshoot. You can take your yearbook photo for free, or if you would like several outfit changes, pay a small fee for more outfit changes.

Caps and gowns and formal attire will be provided. If you’d rather wear something gender-neutral, you may wear an all-black sweater, a solid-black button down, or a formal, all-black top of your choosing.

We highly recommend you take your photos in May even though there will be dates throughout the summer. All times are after underclass exams toward the end of the school year.

Please click the link below to schedule. If you have any questions, please email Mr. David Greene at [email protected]. But note, however, that scheduling and rescheduling information should be directed to the photo studio using the customer care contact information below.

Below is the contact information for Legacy's customer care service in case you require any assistance

We're excited to get started and we look forward to capturing fantastic images and memories for the Class of 2025!

Yearbook!

THE YEARBOOK HAS ARRIVED, and soon, you’ll be able to receive yours.

Next week, we will be distributing pre-purchased yearbooks after school on May 22 in the commons. If you ordered a yearbook online, this is your time to come and pick it up.

But don’t worry, if you cannot pick your book up after school, you can come to the yearbook hallway during lunches to pick up your book anytime on May 23 or after.

If you DID NOT pre-order a book, you can purchase one for $80, cash only, exact change, again in the yearbook hallway during lunches. But you must act fast, there are a VERY limited amount that have not been reserved and they will sell out very quickly.

If you have any questions, reach out to Mr. Greene, [email protected], or stop by the publications office, F111, during your lunch.

May 10, 2024

This week we had a PAWSome time celebrating our staff for 'Teacher Appreciation Week.' We appreciate what each of our teachers commits to every day. We showed them that "BAR NONE, FHS STAFF IS THE BEST!" Our teachers are leaders, coaches, counselors, club advisors, mentors, and advocates that believe ALL students can achieve.

We asked some of our students what they would like to share about the teachers who have made an impact and I would like to share some of their responses:

Mr. Kil - I am so grateful for you. Thank you so much for your support since I’ve moved here. You’ve helped me tremendously.  Thank you for always keeping me accountable with myself. Thank you for always helping me get better in your class and get good grades. Thank you for taking the time to spend time with me after class. You’re the best Science teacher I’ve ever had .

Ms. Gebler - Thank you for being an amazing English teacher; you make the class so fun! You encourage me to learn skills that will help me next year and the books we read are very interesting! I am lucky you are my teacher.

Ms. West - You are one of the most passionate and caring teachers I have ever known. Never have I ever left a class not understanding what we had learned. You can tell she enjoys teaching and getting involved with her students. She will always encourage you to succeed in whatever you choose. Ms. West knows how to keep students engaged and motivated.

Mr. Garcia - I wanted to convey a message to you to show my gratitude towards your teachings and kindness. It has impacted me more than you know.

Mrs. Lopez - I really appreciate the energy you give us during our time in class and I like how you make class really exciting! You give so much of yourself which shows how much you care and that you want to celebrate us. I appreciate you because you recognize each of us as individuals.

I want to wish all of our FHS community a Happy Mother's Day!

Thank you for your partnership,

🦁 Welcome Future Lions! Class of 2028!

May 2, 2024

Greetings Fairfax Family,

This week at FHS has been PAWSome. We kicked off the week by welcoming over 600 ROARing Lions from The Class of 2028. The morning was filled with a student panel, school tours, and club connections. Our rising lions are READY!

We were elated to induct over 140 new members to the FHS Honor Society. This ceremony was a celebration of service, character, and academic excellence. We also had the privilege of recognizing over 700 students for making the 3rd Quarter Honor Roll. These students maintained all As and Bs in their classes and were treated to a certificate and a snack attack.

SOL testing began this week. Students were focused, committed, and ready to demonstrate content mastery. We will continue SOL testing throughout the month of May.  AP testing will begin next week, and we are excited for our student's opportunity to demonstrate mastery and the opportunity to earn college credits. YOU'VE GOT THIS LIONS!

May is a month of many celebrations.  Next week, we will celebrate our AMAZING TEACHING STAFF. We appreciate their hard work and dedication to the FHS student body. They connect to our students through positive relationships and provide transformative educational opportunities. THANK YOU.

My hope is that you each enjoy your extended weekend and always stay PAWSitive.

Thank you for your partnership,

Orthodox Good Friday/Teacher Work Day

Friday, May 3, is Orthodox Good Friday, and a teacher work day. Millions of Orthodox Christians commemorate Good Friday, also known as “Great Friday” to remember the events leading up to Jesus' crucifixion. There will be no school for students that day. See the complete school year calendar.

People with ancestral roots in Asia and the islands of the Pacific have been integral to the story of America. In 1992, May was designated Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to celebrate their heritage and contributions. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Since its inception in 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has been a cornerstone of addressing the challenges faced by millions of Americans living with mental health conditions. Throughout the month, NAMI actively participates in this national movement, dedicated to eradicating stigma, extending support, fostering public education and advocating for policies that prioritize the well-being of individuals and families affected by mental illness.

Jewish American Heritage Month

May is a national month of recognition of the history of Jewish contributions to American culture, acknowledging the diverse achievement of the Jewish community in the U.S. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

Due to the student holiday on May 3, the next  Principal's Coffee will be held on Friday, May 10, at 7:30am in the library. This is the last one of the school year, so join us for coffee and conversation with Principal Aye.

Fairfax Lions Nice to Know:  Class of 2025 Senior Portraits

English Department Awards

April 26, 2024

Happy Friday Fairfax Families,

We have had a PAWSome week at FHS and we are now gearing up for a season of testing, finals, and the last full month of school.

We celebrated our Administrative Professionals this week. Our AA team is often the first voices you hear when you call the school to collaborate and share information. We are grateful to our team's commitment in providing amazing customer and community service.

Our English Department was busy this week! The English Department Awards ceremony recognized several students for their talents, growth, creativity, and commitments in both English and English Elective classes. Our English team also had many students showcase their high-quality research presentations in AP Research and AP Seminar. Can you SHOUT COLLEGE READY? These presentations focused on in-depth research, inquiry, data analysis and reflection.

Our Dance Academy students took to the stage to showcase their amazing talents and bring awareness to cultural issues through dance. This team was a recipient of the Wolf Trap Grant for Performing Arts and they worked with an artist in resident and guest choreographer to create an amazing piece.

We were elated to recognize our National Board-Certified Teachers, Ms. Hanapole and Ms. Sridharan, who renewed their certification and commitments to bringing exemplary education to our scholars every day.

Today, we welcomed 400 of our elementary friends to a matinee performance of Anastasia. Our future lions were excited, entertained, and ROARing with applause as they cheered on our FHS Theater Department.

This time of year, can be the most enjoyable and the most stressful time for students. If you feel your student needs additional supports managing stress and/or their workload, please connect with their counselor or their administrator.

We want to ensure each student finished the year PAWSitively.

Thank you for your partnership,

Our Fairfax Academy Dance program was the recipient of a performing arts grant from the Wolf Trap Foundation. As part of the grant, they participated at a "celebratory day of learning" on April 25 and were able to perform at Wolf Trap. Congratulations!

Staff Spotlight 💐 Happy Administrative Professionals Day

Wednesday, April 24, was Administrative Professionals Day.

We celebrated our amazing team, who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our school up and running! We couldn't do what we do without them. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication, day in and day out. We are truly grateful for you!

Fairfax Lions Need to Know: Calendar Reminder: Orthodox Good Friday/Teacher Work Day, Principal's Coffee

Due to the student holiday on May 3, the next  Principal's Coffee will be held on Friday, May 10, at 7:30am in the library. This is the last one of the school year, so join us for coffee and conversation with Principal Aye.

🙋Attendance Matters!

As we approach the end of the school year, it’s important for students to stay engaged, attend school, and finish strong! Visit the FCPS website for attendance resources

Visit the Fairfax HS website for attendance reminders, and proper early release and late arrival procedures. Thank you for your support!

☀️🎨🎶 Summer Arts Camp

Don’t miss out on this summer’s most exciting arts enrichment program! The Institute for the Arts camp is for students currently in grade 6-11. Students design their own schedules and select from art, music, theater, and dance classes. Learn more on the IFTA webpage. Email [email protected] with any questions.

📋FAFSA

How to Get Help Filling Out the FAFSA

According to recent news reports, as many as 30% fewer graduating seniors have completed and submitted a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Many schools rely upon this form to grant students financial aid award letters.

Families who have questions or persistent issues filling out the FAFSA might consider scheduling a free appointment with our partners at College Access Fairfax. Email [email protected]. All FAFSA help provided by our school or College Access Fairfax is free.

All Night Grad Party Update ~ We Need You!

Volunteers Needed at the ANG Celebration, June 4

To make this party happen, we need adult volunteers that night at the St. James.  In order to have the All Night Graduation Celebration at the St. James, the venue REQUIRES a minimum of 1 chaperone/volunteer per 10 students to run this event! (The St. James will cancel without full volunteer staffing).  That means we will need over 60 adult volunteers over two shifts at the party.

We have a range of volunteer positions open – setup, arrival assistance, bag check, food service, casino dealers, prizes, and roving chaperones.  We also need people in the leads for these areas.  Volunteer shifts run 3 to 4 hours over the course of the night (you can sign-up for two shifts and stay for the whole party).

You can sign up to volunteer at the following SignUpGenius Link:

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F4EA9A62FA7F58-49226288-allnight

Volunteers can be parents, alumni, family, and friends of FHS.  This is open to parents with students at ALL grade levels, it is not limited to Senior Class parents (but we certainly want their support).  Please to share this link with anyone who may want to help out at the party.

Only You Can Help Make the Party Happen!

April 19, 2024

Happy Friday Fairfax!

It has been a fantastic week of events and action here at FHS. Our classes are focused on a strong fourth quarter finish, end of the year mastery assessments, papers, and projects are the focus, creativity is in bloom with our artistic students showcasing their visual arts projects and the opening week of Anastasia (GRAB YOUR TICKETS). The weather has heated up and the fields and courts are filled with LIONS ON THE ROAR. This week we were WELL and had students lead WELLness activities during our lunches for some added fun and we closed out the events with a FUN FRIDAY.

My message this week is filled with some snapshots of amazing student events:

This week our Student Panel elevated their voices at the City School Board meeting. We are grateful for their input, feedback and insights. THANK YOU.

The Fairfax Pyramid Art Show was so inspiring. It is amazing to see the creativity of our scholars from Kindergarten to 12th Grade. Many teachers, family, and friends attended the event to celebrate the success of our students. We had several students who sold amazing pieces of their work!

The Math Department Awards Ceremony and Math and Computer Science Honor Society Inductions were an amazing afternoon of celebrating academic excellence.

Our Dance Academy students headed over to FCPS Central Office to share their creative movement and in-depth reflection.

The FHS Auto Tech Advisory Board met to discuss innovation and partnership in the Automotive Industry.

This morning, we honored 100 students who were recognized by their teacher for "TAKING THE LEAD" - these Lions are working hard in their classrooms to exemplify POG skills and content mastery.

Thank you for your partnership,

Student Spotlight Rotary Speech Contest

Senior Alex Hill brought home 1st place in the Area Rotary Speech contest last weekend! Alex won a $1,000 scholarship, and she will present her speech at the Rotary Youth Summit at the University of Mary Washington this  Saturday. Pictured L-R is English Teacher, Heather Davids, Alex Hill, and Fairfax City Rotary Youth Director, Julia Strickland. Congrats, Alex!

🎶 All-Virginia Music Students

One hundred eighty-one FCPS students have been selected to perform at the 2024 All-Virginia Band, Chorus, and Orchestra event which will take place April 18-20.

Students throughout Virginia went through a rigorous audition process to compete for positions within these ensembles. Participants will rehearse with nationally recognized conductors and collaborate with fellow musicians during the event, which is free and open to the public.

The Fairfax High School students selected for the groups in 2024 are (pictured L-R above):

Andy Richardson (chorus)

Elias Falke (chorus)

Chris Sung (orchestra)

Ainsley Buice (chorus)

Leo Johnson (band)

The concerts will be held in the Richmond Convention Center on Saturday, April 20, beginning at 1 p.m. and ending at 4:30 p.m. More information about the event is available online.

Congratulations to our students, we are so PROUD!!!

DECA Financial Literacy Project

It was an exciting this week at Fairfax High School as 3 DECA members, Sami Moudarres, Austin Mitchell, and Marco Vicencio, presented their Financial Literacy Project to the school's administrative leadership team and MainStreet Bank.

These students created a relationship in the community with Eagle View Elementary and developed a Market Day for students in grades 4-6 to prepare a business plan that focused on financial understanding in a hands-on environment.

MainStreet Bank recognized the students’ financial literacy contribution in the community with a $7,500 check.

This was such an awesome experience to see the students exhibit authentic learning and be recognized by a local bank for their DECA Financial Literacy Project as they head to the DECA International Career Development Conference.

So many smiles! Congrats, Lions!!!!

Fairfax Lions Need to Know: Calendar Reminders: Passover, Earth Day, Theravada

Passover and Half-O Days

Many Jewish communities in the United States celebrate Passover, a recognition of the deliverance of Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. Passover is also known as Pesah, Pesach, or the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Many Jewish families in the United States eat a ceremonial meal known as the Seder, which involves telling the story of the exodus from Egypt as well as eating various symbolic foods, such as meat of the paschal lamb and bitter herbs, recalling the harsh life of slavery. Learn more about Passover in NatGeo Kids

Monday, April 22, and Tuesday, April 23, are designated half-O days in recognition of the first two days of Passover. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days.

🌏 Earth Week Resources for Schools

Fairfax County Park Authority's Earth Day Festival will be held Saturday, April 20, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Sully Historic Site. The festival will include earth and nature-focused programs, scavenger hunts, and other activities.

Get2Green is hosting FCPS Earth Week from Monday, April 22, to Friday, April 26. Check the Get2Green Earth Week webpage for Earth Week spirit days and other activities for students of all ages.

Theravada New Year (O Day)

In countries where Theravada Buddhism is the most dominant religion, New Year is celebrated for three days from the first full moon in April. Theravada means “the teachings of the elders.” Celebrations begin with people attending the local temple in the morning for chanting and meditation. In the afternoon they have a water festival in which they meet the Buddha image and pay respect to the elderly by watering their hands together. Building sandcastles is also one of the most popular activities during this day of celebration. Wednesday, April 24, is designated as an O day for Theravada New Year. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days.

See the complete school year calendar.

SEL Screener Results

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s counselor

💻 No-Cost Mental Health Teletherapy for All High School Students

Is your high schooler experiencing anxiety, behavior changes, or challenges with peer and family relationships? If so, parents/caregivers can refer their children for weekly therapy with a licensed therapist through Hazel Health.

Visit the Teletherapy webpage for information on how to opt your child into this service.

It is a FABULOUS WEEK @ FAIRFAX!  We began this week celebrating the Month of the Military Child and also collaborating with staff on our journey to becoming a Purple Heart School. As we continue to create a space and place for ALL students and their families, we are excited to celebrate our military community. Every Thursday we wear PURPLE and each Friday we wear RED (Remember Everyone Deployed) to support our community. We have also planned a pizza luncheon and musical concert opportunity for our families.

Fairfax High School hosted a dynamic Junior Focus Day. The Class of 2025 had the opportunity to attend multiple sessions and begin critically thinking about options and choices after high school. We thank our College and Career Specialist and Counseling Team for organizing this event. There were sessions that included topics around college admissions, college essay writing, empowering all ambitions, and community college. We also invited in specialists from trade schools, our police and fire department, and various branches of the military. Students enjoyed the variety of opportunities.

The FCPS CTE Advisory Board stopped by for a day of fun learning at Fairfax Academy and Fairfax High School. The team was able to visit CTE classrooms, collaborate with teachers and students, and engage in robust dialogue about experiences and industry opportunities. One theme that continued to surface was students are looking for classroom opportunities that translate into job opportunities, real-world applications, and college preparation. We can never stop innovating our curricular offerings.

The sunlight has emerged, and the weather has warmed up. We are ready for an amazing Junior/Senior Prom Night.

Thank you for your partnership,

🤧 Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

✅ School Health Services Satisfaction Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department and FCPS School Health Services invite parents/caregivers to participate in a survey on the level of satisfaction with support provided to your school community by School Health Services. The survey takes about five minutes to complete and is open until Friday, April 26. Your feedback can help to improve school health services.

Mental Health in Childhood

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with children’s physical and mental health. Mental health disorders such as ADHD and anxiety are the most commonly diagnosed in children, which commonly occurs together. Anxiety are feelings of worry, apprehension or dread that something bad is going to happen. Children diagnosed with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors, or be overly active. Early diagnosis and appropriate services for children and their families can make a difference in the lives of children with mental health disorders.

Anxiety related triggers are lonely and frightening emotional responses related to situations, persons, places or objects. Today’s sources of stress for our students include: increased coursework and graduation requirements, extracurricular activities, household responsibilities, and social media. Social media has been a great way to increase connection and communication, but for our young people it contributes to shorter attention spans and information overload. Signs of anxiety include appearing worried, irritable or nervous, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, along with physical symptoms such as sleeping problems, headaches, and stomach aches. It is understandable for a parent to be worried because figuring out what to do is hard. Here are five simple ways to respond to teens with anxiety:

  1. Recognize warning signs.
  2. Guide your child to take a few deep breaths to slow things down.
  3. Make sure your child understands you are available if they need to talk.
  4. Acknowledge your child’s feelings and avoid downplaying situations or issues.
  5. Help them come up with ways to deal with the situation next time.

April is School Library Month

Happy School Library Month to our phenomenal Librarians, Lyndsay Friedman and Lynette Constantinides! Our library is a safe and welcoming space for all sorts of creativity and learning. THANK YOU for all you do!

April 5, 2024

Happy Friday Fairfax Families!

Our 4th quarter has come ROARing in, and we are ready to finish strong. I hope that you enjoyed a relaxing spring break and are ready for both focus and fun in this final chapter of the school year.

This week we celebrated the Assistant Principals! This amazing team works hard to support students and staff and is always elated to collaborate with our families and community. We "thank you" for all you do! I am grateful for their leadership.

We also celebrated our school librarians this week. Our library is a space for exploration, innovation, creation, and exposure. The rigorous research lessons provided, the weekly book trailers, the ever-changing displays, the accessible reorganization of our collections, and the favorite puzzles are always making 🪄 magic for our Lions.

Last night we celebrated the completion of the new turf fields for baseball, and softball. These facilities are top notch, and we are thankful to the City of Fairfax and City School Board for providing our school community with these resources!

These last few weeks are always action packed and filled with JOY and accomplishment! Anastasia, Arts, Prom, Graduation, Awards, and College Fairs are just a few of our upcoming activities.

Happy Friday Fairfax Family, thank you for your partnership,

Prom Dress Giveaway Event

Fairfax student, Esther Cameron, partnered with Fashion Club to collect and offer prom dresses at no cost to students.

It is so impressive that these students collected dresses and created a “no questions asked” environment for ALL to try on dresses and take one (or two) home. Several asked to take a dress to a family member.

The environment was festive, inclusive, and joyful. It is with Fairfax Pride that we share that over 100 dresses were collected and over 40 dresses were distributed on the first day! The remaining dresses are available in the Family Engagement office.

Staff Spotlight National Assistant Principals Week, April 1-5

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

Solar Eclipse, Monday, April 8

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce this at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. The NASA website has more information about eye safety.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. Please remind your child to be especially vigilant about eye safety during dismissal. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

🏫 Advertised Budget Focuses on Schools and Instruction

Investing in excellence means putting our dollars where it matters most — schools and instruction. Nearly 93% of FCPS full-time staff work directly in our schools. And nearly 86% of FCPS’ Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Advertised Budget is dedicated to instructional programs across all grade levels, including special education.

Only 5% of the advertised budget is for general support and central administration. Central office administrators represent only 0.8% of total full-time positions.

For more details on FCPS’ advertised budget, view budget documents, including the FY 2025 Budget Book.

Check out the Budget Calendar for important dates in the budget process as well as opportunities for the community to provide feedback.

We Appreciate our Students!

March 22, 2024

Happy Friday Fairfax Family,

Today we ended a SUPER Student Appreciation Week and welcome a much-needed Spring Break. This week has been delightful as we gave over 2000 positive affirmations to students, had a MAJOR SNACK ATTACK SCHOOLWIDE, provided stress relieving fidgets, hugged horses and calmed with the llamas, played minute to win it games, and heard from staff and our community what they appreciate most about our LIONS. It was PAWSome. I even had the pleasure of hopping over to Daniel's Run and participating in a MAJOR Morning Meeting with the Dragons, this lion was disguised as a bunny, but we all ROARed.

Our Fashion Marketing students created a show that ROCKED and ROARED through genres of music. The Portrait of a Graduate skills these students used around communication, collaboration, and creativity were top notch. The students planned the show, built sets, designed scenes, connected with vendors for clothing rentals, and executed a flawless and fierce fashion frenzy. It was amazing to celebrate each student's role from stage to behind the scenes. Our student audience was entertained and inspired.

Spring Break is here. It may be chilly, but the daffodils are blooming, the days are longer, and the sun is shining. I hope you take some time to rest, refresh, and always ROAR!

Have a wonderful break. Thank you for your partnership,

A Reminder that FCPS Schools and School Offices will be closed during Spring Break, March 25-29.

April 1-2 are Student Holidays/Teacher Work Days, and the FHS Main Office will be open 7:30am-4pm.

The next Principal's Desk newsletter will be sent on Friday, April 5. Have a great Spring Break!

Sophomore College Night was a Big Success!

March 15, 2024

Greetings Fairfax Family,

This week was action packed. It feels like "Spring has Sprung" and as the daffodils are blooming in front of the school, the extended daylight and warm weather are welcoming the close of Quarter 3 and Spring Break. This week we recognized Pi Day with a challenging trivia game and contest, we were aware to "BE AWARE" of The Ides of March, and our Student Stakeholder Group educated students around equity and inclusion and asked them to "Join the Movement" and commit to creating a more safe and inclusive school community.

Tuesday evening, we hosted our Sophomore College Planning Night that allowed our 10th grade students and families to begin thinking about the college selection process and admissions process.  We also invited our families to join the kickoff of our Edu-Futuro program that educates families on building strong relationships and preparing for college.

Drumroll Please, Fairfax High School achieves Blue Ribbon School status in our music program, AGAIN! Congratulations to our Choir, Band, and Orchestra students and teachers. We are ROARING with PRIDE.

This is the last week of Quarter 3, please take some time review Schoology and check ParentVue  and make a plan with your student.  Student Appreciation Week is also up next, and we will offer words of gratitude, games, animals, music, snacks, stress relievers and of course FAIRFAX FUN during lunches each day.

Saint Patrick's Day is this weekend, and it reminds US, we are  LUCKY TO BE LIONS!

Spring Break🌷

March 25-29 is spring break. Schools and school offices will be closed. We wish our students and teachers a happy and restful Spring Break!

See the complete school year calendar.

Good Friday, March 29

Good Friday, the Friday before Easter, is the day on which Christians annually observe the commemoration of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This year, Good Friday falls on March 29. Good Friday is a day of mourning. During special Good Friday services Christians meditate on Jesus's suffering and death on the cross, and what this means for their faith. Read more at Britannica.com.

This year's Good Friday artwork was created by Chantilly High School student Summer S. #OurFCPSSummer’s artwork was designed as part of the FCPS Observance Design Challenge for Students. Learn more about the challenge: https://bit.ly/47oHw2j

Easter, March 31

A joyful Easter to all in our community who celebrate! This year's Easter artwork was created by Falls Church High School student Dayanara M. The springtime celebration of Easter is the most important Christian holiday. It commemorates the resurrection of Jesus, who sacrificed so that Christians may have life with God after death. #OurFCPSThis artwork was designed as part of the FCPS Observance Design Challenge for Students. Learn more about Easter at NatGeo Kids

Ramadan: Sundown, March 10 - April 9.

The Library and Hallway 23  spaces are designated areas within our school. Students can engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis, permission slips and passes will be provided.

✅ Take the Family Engagement Survey!

The Fairfax HS Family Engagement Center has already had a huge impact on our school community. In order to continue providing the best possible services, please consider completing the FCPS Family Engagement Survey.  Your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve FCPS practices and specifically, Fairfax High School, to best support our students.

The survey is available in 10 languages. Parents/caregivers may stop by the Family Resource Center (right next to the FHS main office) to fill out a paper survey, or you can complete the survey online by using this survey link. Get more information on the Family Engagement Survey webpage

Questions, please reach out to our Family Liaisons. Thank you for your support!

FHS Learning Lounge

Did you know? Students can get after-school help during the Learning Lounge on Wednesdays and Thursdays (late bus days). After dismissal, students should sign in with Mr. Friedman in room A101, and he will connect students with a content specialist in that subject.

Opioid Conversation

Join a Conversation on Fentanyl and Other Drugs

A community conversation on the opioid crisis in Northern Virginia will be held Monday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. (Please enter through Door #14). Attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services within FCPS and Fairfax County.

This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed will be suitable for students in grade 6 and higher. Language interpretation will be available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed.

Learn more about the event and register online.

Immunization Clinics

🩹 Measles Is Preventable

Measles is making headlines as the number of cases nationwide has topped 40, with three confirmed cases in people living in or traveling through the National Capital Region.

The good news is that measles is preventable through vaccination! Vaccines help teach the immune system how to defend against germs, helping to build up natural defenses. Give your child the best protection against measles with two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website to find out more about measles.

Extended Hours at Immunization Clinics

To help parents/caregivers obtain vaccinations for their children, the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will offer immunization clinics with extended hours:

Parents/caregivers should make an appointment but a limited number of walk-ins will be accepted. Please call 703-246-7100 to schedule an appointment.

Learn more about vaccinating your child and find community resources to support their health and well-being.

Note: All students enrolling in public and private schools in Virginia are required to be adequately immunized per the Code of Virginia.

Fairfax County's Funding of the FCPS Budget

The average amount of funds transferred from Fairfax County to FCPS was 52.6% of county disbursements from fiscal years (FY) 2019-2023. It dipped to 51.6% in FY 2024. The County’s budget proposal for next year would transfer 51.4% of total disbursements.

If the county were to return to transferring 52.6% to FCPS for the upcoming year, that would equate to $63 million more to invest in excellence.

Cultural Celebration

Congrats to all our participants for the Cultural Celebration, led by our hard-working teacher, Sara Chae. What an outstanding job and amazing show!!

March 8, 2024

This week has been amazing. The rich culture, diverse community, and amazing talents of our Fairfax High School students have been showcased and shared with our entire student body during LION TIME and it was PAWSome. Our Cultural Celebration is a wonderful program that educates, enlightens, and celebrates our students and how they show up EVERYDAY! Tonight is your last chance to CHECK IT OUT!

We had a delightful time being recognized by our PTSA for Staff Appreciation Week. From SWAG to SWEETS to LUNCH and TREATS we felt the love. WE also ROARed for OUR RAFFLES and enjoyed all of the hospitality and fun. Parents are the key partners in the work we do each day to support student success. THANK YOU.

DECA DOMINATION was heard from our amazing student team as over 94 LIONS competed in The DECA State Competition of Virginia. 16 of these students have qualified for NATIONALS and our ready to take the projects and skills to the next level.  Our Rotary Club hosted The Fairfax High School Speech Contest and our student competitors delivered eloquent and well-crafted speeches promoting hope, diversity, service, and change.  One finalist is headed to the area competition.

The weather is warming, the sun is shining, and we will SPRING FORWARD this weekend.

Set your alarms and soak up some of the Spring season as the days become longer.

Thank you for your partnership,

Fairfax Lions Need to Know: Calendar Reminders: Daylight Saving Time, Youth Art Month, School Social Work Week

Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

See the complete school year calendar.

Celebrating Arts in Our Schools

The Council for Art Education (CFAE) administers Youth Art Month. Youth Art Month encourages support for quality school art programs, and promotes art material safety. The program provides a medium for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences unlike any other curriculum subjects, including Problem Solving, Creativity, Observation, and Communication.

Art shows, special exhibits, fundraisers, and school and community activities take place annually, traditionally during March, to celebrate visual art education for grades K-12.

March has also been designated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®), the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation. The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. MIOSM is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community, and to display the benefits that school music brings to students of all ages.

Theatre In Our Schools (TIOS) is a celebration of theatre in our schools and schools in our theatres. Sponsored by the American Alliance for Theatre & Education (AATE) and the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA), the goals of TIOS are to raise public awareness of the impact of theatre education and draw attention to the need for more access to quality programs in and out of school for all students. While TIOS presentations and advocacy may happen anytime in schools, theatres, and other public spaces, AATE and EdTA will recognize and promote March as the official Theatre In Our Schools month.

National School Social Work Week

March 3-9 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Here at Fairfax HS we are fortunate to have Brian Hasser, Kailyn Slade, and Ashley Curl, working tirelessly for our school community, and being such strong advocates for our students and their families. Thank you! Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.

FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey is now open. Survey partner K12 Insight emailed a link to families on March 3 and again on March 6. Please participate! Your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve FCPS practices to best support our students.

The survey is available in 10 languages. Parents/caregivers may stop by the front office to fill out a paper survey or complete the survey online. Please check your email for the survey invitation or use this survey link. Get more information on the Family Engagement Survey webpage

FCPS Budget

#InvestInExcellence 📊

Did you know Virginia provides less funding per student than many neighboring states including Maryland, Kentucky, and West Virginia? This is about $1,900 per student in state underfunding of Virginia’s students and $345 million for FCPS.

In July 2023, results were released from a study that was requested by the Virginia General Assembly to understand the costs of education in Virginia and the Standards of Quality funding formula.

This Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) study revealed that on average, school districts in other states get 14% more funding per student than in Virginia, even after considering the differences in labor costs between states. This means that localities (like Fairfax County) go above and beyond in local funding to make up for state funding shortfalls.

FHS Learning Lounge

Did you know? Students can get after-school help during the Learning Lounge on Wednesdays and Thursdays (late bus days). After dismissal, students should sign in with Mr. Friedman in room A101, and he will connect students with a content specialist in that subject.

Fairfax DECA Success at State Conference

DECA is one of the nation’s largest co-curricular student organizations that prepares emerging business leaders for careers in Marketing, Management, Finance, Hospitality, & Entrepreneurship.

This past weekend, 94 FHS DECA Members attended the State Leadership Conference in Virginia Beach. At the conference, students demonstrate their strengths through both a written component such as an exam, extensive marketing research with a business or organization, as well as an interactive component such as a presentation or role-play. Industry professionals serve as the judges for these events.

As an integral part of the classroom curriculum, DECA’s industry-validated competitive events are aligned with the National Curriculum Standards in the career clusters of marketing, business management and administration, finance, and hospitality and tourism.  DECA’s competitive events directly contribute to all participating students being college and career ready when they graduate from high school.

Fairfax High School DECA earned the highest recognition with the Blue-Chip award for FHS DECA chapters’ program of work and annual report.  Fairfax DECA was also recognized for their commitment to community service.  The Entrepreneurship Mane Market was Gold Certified as a Small Business Enterprise.
